There is an electric door release for every type of door and every application, but the principles are the same; a balance between speed, security, and convenience.

Locking magnets
Locking magnets are only secure when power is maintained. Ideal for day security on pedestrian doors.
Maglocks are used for additional stability on gates, but may require additional power & switching.
Electric strikes
Door strikes are fitted to the door frame and mate to an existing latch. They are more secure than locking magnets, with higher holding force. They can be fail secure or fail open.
Gate & door bolt
Essential to rural security as auto-mated gates are relatively easily forced by thieves.
Activation
The design of a pedestrian door control needs to consider security and safety. For example, a fire exit door needs to unlock in an emergency. Private rooms and secure closets must be able to be released from inside without the use of a key. Exit buttons may need to be self illuminating.
