GSM intercom pro's & con's

GSM intercoms use the mobile 'phone network to make calls to a landline or mobile. They are simple to instal, requiring only a power supply and an antenna.

A PAYG or contract SIM card needs to be installed and credit kept topped up. UK mobile 'phone coverage is only 90%, so not guaranteed at a location. We recommend a roaming service, as service providers can drop an area.

Credit dropout anxiety and running costs can cause resistance to reliance on GSM services. The alternatives are IP intercoms or connection to a landline.

A-G24  villa set

The A-G24 villa intercom set has one call button. If the primary resident's number fails to answer, the call is diverted to a second, then a third number. When a resident answers, they can activate either output relay.

Relays can also be activated by keypad or dial to open or by text message. There is an RTE input for each relay output which is for a button or vehicle exit sensr, or for time zone clock.

Codes and numbers can be set by keypad using a master-code for authorised access, or by text, or using the Forelock app.

The call button has a blue rim that flashes to show the intercom is connected.  The button can also give other feedback on signal strength & operation.

Dial to open

Also known as caller line ID, this feature checks the number of any caller dialing in. The door will be opened for authorised numbers.

The three residents numbers are authorised auto-matically. A further 50 numbers can be added via the key pad using the admin mastercode. They use memory locations 201-250.

The SIM card number can be enetred on a phone as a quick dial number. The intercom drops the call as soon as the number is recognised, so the caller does not incur a call charge.

If security is not important, dial to open function can be opened to anyone who is given the SIM card number.

Keypad codes

Keypad codes are entered via the key pad using the admin master-code. There a are 3 code groups;

  • Codes 1-100 operate output 1
  • Codes 101-150 operate output 2
  • Codes 151-200 are single use codes that operate output 1, then deletes the code.

Codes can be set as a timed pulse, or as a toggle (for hold open).

Timed modes

Modes are set on external timers so different time profiles for each day of the week. The 4 modes are

  • DAY mode is the default. The door opens by access control and residents
  • NIGHT mode disables the call function so that residents are not distrubed at night
  • FREE mode opens the door when the call button is pressed. No call is made
  • HOLIDAY mode disables all access when you are away.

This example might be on a school. The green would be allocated FREE. Blue zone would be DAY mode. Red zone would be NIGHT mode. Note the blue lunch break.

A keyswitch can be used instead of a time clock, or wired to override the time clock.

Forelock app

Forelock is a monitoring and control app for automated doors and gates residing on a GSM connected smartphone. Each output takes a row on the home screen. The A-G24 is a twin relay intercom, so gets two rows. Each output can be named.

Forelock allows editing of the connected devices. It will be updated to work with more devices, not only Forematic.

A-G26 apartment panel

GSM intercom panels are cost effective modern solutions to apartment block entry. The landlord does not need to supply apartment stations, but tenents need a landline or mobile 'phone.

GSM panels are an ideal replacement for old buildings where the wiring may be failing, without the expense of providing broadband connection for the building.

The A-G26 panel offers three methods of access control, by card, by keypad code, and dial in from a resident.

Visitor codes can be time enabled for apartments on short lets, holiday accomodation, and halls of residence.

FEATURES

  • Setting via keypad or text
  • RFID card access, 3 cards per apartment
  • 2 relay outputs with RTE inputs
  • Four versions - 50, 160, 260, or 512 apartments
  • User data is on a removeable memory card for easy transfer
  • Time enabled keypad codes for temporary stay visitors
  • Mass user data upload using PC spreadsheet software
  • Illuminated TFT menu screen with search facility

The search facility can help visitors find a resident by apartment number or name or phone number.

A-G26 is an apartment block intercom with a heavy alloy panel. It needs a voice enabled 4G SIM card to connect to a mobile ‘phone service. Each apartment gets 3 dial up numbers and 3 keycodes and 3 access control cards. There is an additional ‘public code’ that can be used for general access.

Visitors can search for tenants by name or number via a backlit display. The panel  issues voice prompts to help users. Visitor help messages are kept on a microSD card, so can be altered for site specific messages.  The display can be customised with a screen saver message such as the building name.

There are two door relays with an exit button for each.  The tenant can open doors when called from the panel. User details and functional settings are set thru the keypad, or a connected PC using a GUI, or edited via SMS.

Events logs can be viewed through the display. 5 reports are selected by card use, keycode use, call in numbers, tenant called, or temp code use.

A-G64   GSM relay

"Dial to open" is a feature on GSM intercoms which checks the number of any caller dialing in, and activates a relay to open a door or gate. The ID check is known in telephony industry as caller line ID, or CLI.

The door will be opened for authorised numbers. The SIM card number can be enetred on a phone as a quick dial number. The intercom drops the call as soon as the number is recognised, so the caller does not incur a call charge.

Quick dial on a phone

The A-G64 can store 200 numbers plus an admin 'phone number. If security is not important the device can be set to 'ANY' mode, so that it responds to any received call. The caller only needs to be given the SIM card number.

A-G64 has a 12Vdc or 24Vac versions. A nano SIM card needs to be inserted into the sim socket, and the antenna connected.
